It’s almost that time of year when we start looking into how to host a 4th of July party that will be fun and stress-free for everyone, including the host! The start of July is basically dedicated to preparing for and gathering together to celebrate the nation’s independence and proudly rep the red, white and blue. Hosting this holiday gathering can be overwhelming at times, but these 5 tips will help you nail this thing with ease.
This post is all about how to host a 4th of July party and 5 tips to pull it off.
Casual and laid back gatherings are what summer is all about. Yet when it comes to hosting a 4th of July party, it is easy to become overwhelmed with prepping your home for a celebration with friends and/or family. American’s love to celebrate independence day with fun summer food, red, white and blue themed decor, and all kinds of fireworks, sparklers or anything that glows. It’s truly the party of the summer!
Here’s 5 quick tips on hosting all of the 4th of July fun.
Tip #1: Use Year-Round Solid Colored Serving Ware
Keep things simple and use any sort of solid white, blue, or red dishes and tableware for serving. Depending on how many people are attending, you can opt for paper plates and plastic utensils for guests to eat from instead of glassware.
Tip #2: Spruce Up The Food With 4th of July Colors and Decor
Taking an easy, popular dish and tweaking it to include festive colors or decorations is all you really need. This could be as simple as serving Jell-O in red and blue only, making chocolate dipped strawberries with blue dyed white chocolate and star sprinkles, or anything else you like! Or, you could always opt for decor to bring in that festive feel like the American flag toothpicks used in this recipe.
If anything, holidays are a great excuse to be a little ~cheesy~ with the food you serve. For 4th of July, it is 1,000% acceptable to have an abundance of heavily dyed and decorated red, white, and food appetizers and desserts. One of my favorites that avoids the addition of dyed food coloring are these strawberry, mozzarella and blueberry balsamic skewers. They make for a refreshing bite sized appetizer and pack in the best of both sweet and salty worlds. Grab that recipe here!
I mean, c’mon… look how cute these are with the mini American flag topped toothpicks! Using decor and added props like these toothpicks are another fun way to bring all the spirit to an Independence Day party.
Tip #3: Cover The Basics – Food, Flags, Fireworks and Music
Let’s be honest, when going to a 4th of July party people want to see food, flags, music and fireworks. As long as these four things are covered, guests will be happy. Anything additional to the food, flags, music and fireworks is a bonus. Use the internet and music streaming apps to your advantage. There are so many great 4th of July party playlists out there that you can choose from. That’s an easy one you can get crossed off your prep list early! CHECK!
Tip #4: Load Up on Bug Repellent
It’s not uncommon to wake up the morning after a 4th of July celebration to a feeling of itchiness on your whole body, only to realize you’ve been eaten alive by mosquitos the night before. Not a single human out there enjoys having mosquito bites (at least I would hope not) which is why it is so important to have bug repellent ready for everyone to use.
There’s a few routes you can go in to provide the optimal amount of protection the night of your celebration:
- Good ole’ bug spray – Classic bug spray will do the trick! Have a few of these scattered throughout the outdoor area so anyone can apply some when they need to. In addition to bug spray, you could also get a few of the clip-on fan repellents for those that simply can’t stand the smell or stickiness of bug spray.
- Backyard bug control fog – Pretreat your yard with a bug repellent prior to the party. You can spray your yard a few days in advance or just a few hours before the party to provide yard-wide protection. You can get this OFF! Backyard Pretreat Bug Repellent from Target.
- DIY bug repellent home remedies that double as party decor – Who says bug repellent can’t be fun and functional? Opting for a homemade bug repellent to put on outdoor tables is a functional way to dress it up and also keep those blood sucking bugs away. Check out the recipe below for an awesome homemade and natural bug repellent. Either add the mixture to a large clear dish and top with floating candles or divide the mixture into mason jars for multiple tables.
Tip #5: Get the Games Out!
Outdoor games are always the move when it comes to celebrating on a nice summer night! There’s so many to choose from but I would recommend doing a mix of classic yard games with one or two 4th of July themed games. Bags (or cornhole as some may know it) is a fan-favorite and one that you can count on people enjoying! If you wanted to switch things up and add a little red, white and blue to it, there’s a 4th of July banner style bean bag toss game on Amazon for under $15!
